5 Ways to Keep Your Railings Season Ready All Year

Last month showed us the power unleashed on properties with unplanned weather such as heavy rains and hurricanes. With winter almost upon us, now is the perfect time to inspect your railing installations to ensure they are safe and secure when the snow, ice, and other inclement weather hits.

  1. Visual Inspection
After the busy summer season and before the winter storms is the best time to fully inspect every rail on your property. We recommend regular visual inspections, but this time of year is perfect to go over every inch for obvious - and not so obvious - signs of wear and tear.

Using a property map as a guide it's easy to mark of the exact locations that need extra TLC. Do this before, during, and after your regular cleaning cycles as it's easier to see problem areas before temporarily washing them away.

Pay close attention to the connectors and supports to ensure they are properly fastened.

  2. Thorough Cleaning
This may seem obvious but while working on clients' projects we've come across some railings that may have lived a longer life had they been thoroughly cleaned and maintained more regularly.

Cleaning can be done with a soft sponge and non-abrasive soap and water to avoid scratches. Always start with a gentler cleaning solution as some industrial strength products can contribute to fading or discoloration.

  3. Repair Loose Parts
During the visual inspection and cleaning, loose parts on the mountings are easily discovered. Use this time to tighten any fittings or mounts that have become dislodged or damaged and review any railing areas for wear.

Be sure to check hidden areas, and below visible points as those areas can contain the most wear which is missed during your regular maintenance inspections. Use a flashlight or spotlight to illuminate darker areas to get a closer look.

  4. Replace Stress Points
Mountings and fasteners often take the brunt of the weight during use and when repair isn't an option should be replaced immediately.

Always consider the volume of foot traffic and use one railing section may encounter vs. another and replace at the first sign of weakness. It will cost less in the long run to replace a key section than to have that section create wear throughout the installation.

  5. Upgrade to a No-Maintenance System
Metal railings can last many years with regular cleaning and maintenance but over time the finish will dull and chips to the finish may become more obvious, causing safety issues and unsightly rust or corrosion. If you are planning an overall renovation to your grounds - including landscaping - consider how leaving your existing, aging, railing system will look.

The AVCON Thermoplastic System is the only railing solution on the market to offer virtually no maintenance. It simply requires a cleaning to keep it looking fresh for the life of the product. Since there is no coating, minor chips or scratches are not visible as with metal or aluminum products.

For any property that is in a heavy-use area or subject to salt-water/water damage we recommend you consider replacing your current railing with our AVCON Thermoplastic System. The fully fabricated sections are quick to install, and you will see a return on investment vs. your annual maintenance costs almost immediately.
